Today’s the day!  Tonight’s the night!  IT’S GALENTINE’S DAY!  A day where us ladies (and men!) get to appreciate our best friends – the homies who keep us sane, talk shit about our exes with us, and throw shade at that one random asshole who’s got a problem.  If you have one of these stellar bffs in your life, today’s the day to celebrate them!  Buy them lunch!  Give them a hug!  Give them thanks for being such an excellent mainstay in your life!

From Ms. Gun$ Garcia herself:

“Galentine’s Day is made official this year as the day before Valentine’s Day [as] a celebration of friendship.  Imagine Thelma & Louise but  nobody dies at the end and everyone makes out.  Philly’s premiere femme dj squad Gun$ Garcia, Suga Shay, Yolo Ono & K|Rex have teamed up to bring you this action packed aural adventure.  The  mixtape, “Best Budz”,  is a Galentine’s Day mix featuring sanctified sex  jams, secret crush sing-a-longs and some BFF bass!  So, grab a gal pal  or your current make out buddy and press play.  Mix is available for free download on ITSGALENTINESDAY.COM“.

If you’re in Philly tonight, the Galentine’s Day party is goin’ down with all these homies at The Barbary, where they’ll have sweet treats, a DIY Valentine’s station (!!!!), nail art by Nail Tite, and so much more.  You and your gal pals can go out and wild out and live your lives tonight!  So fire up this mixtape and read the interview with Yellow Girl Mob below.

Yellow Girl Mob consists of Gun$ Garcia and Yolo Ono and they’re holdin’ it down in Philly!   These ladies have the freshest steez and the most diverse musical interests.  You never know what to expect from them and that’s one of the most exciting parts about them.  Besides the fact that they’re just totally rad babes.

Cool Breezy: So, what’s Yellow Girl Mob all about?

Gun$ Garcia: The Yellow Girl Mob is about smaller is cuter, hair bows, being totally kawai, plastic, daddy issues, diy, little….yellow…..bitchy.

Yolo Ono: Yellow Girl Mob is a DJ collective featuring Guns Garcia and Yolo Ono. Collaborating under this title empowers us by repurposing our minority status as both Asian and female DJs. As a dynamic duo, we put on a show when we perform and focus on all aspects of our stage presence, from song selection to costuming. I always joke around that we’re like a girl band, both representing really unique styles and genres that blend smoothly.

CB: How’d you guys come together and what do you bring to the dance party of life?

GG: Well, I knew Marissa through her boyfriend, Brooks Bell [Decades Hat Co.] who I had met while I was in college. From the events that I would see her at, I knew she was really into a lot of different music, combined with her super charming personality, I thought she would be really good at Djing so I started teaching her how to dj & we eventually started doing shows/mixtapes together!

YO: We met through mutual friends and attending events in Philadelphia. Regina has much more experience DJing, and taught me from the ground up. It’s been a really wild ride, but I feel pretty lucky to have training wheels and resources like Regina and the Mad Decent Philly family.

CB: Your musical tastes run the gamut from Wavves to Juicy J to Three Loco. With variety in mind, what are some of your favorite records to play at parties?

GG: My favorite songs to play at parties are: The Living Graham Bond – “Werk”, Darq E Freaker – “Blueberry”, Machines Don’t Care & Stanton Warriors – “Beat Dun Drop [Top Billin party mix]“, Solange – “Losing You”, Sky Ferreira – “Everything is Embarrassing”, and Iggy Azalea – “Gold Dust”.

YO: My favorite for a while is “Giliap” by Rebecca and Fiona. It’s upbeat female vocals with a somewhat dark rhythm! I also love “I’m the Boss” by Don Midas, and “Follow You Down (Keys N Krates Remix)” by Zedd.

CB: What can party people expect when they see Yellow Girl Mob behind the decks?

GG: That’s the thing about a Yellow Girl Mob performance, you never know what to expect. We’ve been known to rock so super dope custom costumes, we’ve broken out into a choreographed dance routine, Chippy did a crazy unannounced performance of Money Dance during one of our sets, our music is totally different every time….the only thing guaranteed is you will dance your ass off!

YO: A show. Too many DJs aren’t particularly interesting to watch. Something Regina and I always do is get excited over what we play, and love going over the top, one time we threw wads of paper money all over the crowd!

CB: Musically, what do you think Philly has to offer that no other city can claim?

GG: What Philly has to offer is that it is the home of some of the biggest dj legends in the world including Dj Jazzy Jeff, Dj Diamond Kutz, ?uestlove, Diplo, Dj Cash Money, King Britt and Josh Wink which makes the rest of the Dj’s in Philly exceptionally good, both technically and creatively.

YO: Diversity! There are so many people doing really rad things in Philadelphia sprawling across so many different genres and ages.

CB:  So, Galentine’s Day is the new Valentine’s Day, right?!

GG:  NO! Galentine’s Day is much better than Valentine’s Day! It’s a bad bitch celebration!! It’s about hanging with your best friend looking her in the eye & saying “Yo, thanks for having my back that day that crazy bitch tried to fight me outside the club. Let’s eat some brownies & drink champagne, hahahahahahahah!” It’s about, who cares if you have a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a friend with benefits or an “it’s complicated” Galentine’s Day is about celebrating the friends that have been there for you through thick, thin & drunk.

YO: Galentine’s Day is the real deal! Non-commercialized, Galentine’s day is so hip because it hasn’t been ruined by Hallmark – LOL. It’s about celebrating your girls, because through thick or thin, they totally have your back. It’s also about looking super girly and babely for yourself and for your lady friends, not for the boys.
